Helping Our Kids Engage In Family Conversation

I will be honest and admit that I created this list out of my own necessity. As my teens grew older, family dinners became almost excruciating (for them and for me!). Neither of my kids were big talkers and finding ways to warm up our dinner conversations at the end of very busy days was challenging. Add to it, the constant struggle with sensory issues associated with eating and noise, and it was just not working.

One night, when we had another teen friend over with us for dinner, their collective one word answers to my questions were too much. I decided to do a quick google search and come up with some fun “Would You Rather” questions to get them talking.

Spoiler Alert! It totally worked. In fact, their friend asked the next time he was over if we could do the questions again at dinnertime. Mom for the win!

Not So Obvious Ways To Use These “Would You Rather Questions” With Teens

While this was a great way to open up fun communication around the table, I soon found other, less obvious, but just as effective ways to incorporate “Would You Rather” questions into our learning.

Speech Therapy

Getting a teen to talk when practicing speech is even more challenging than around the dinner table. These questions are a great way to practice reciprocity and speech fluency!

Writing Practice

If you are have a learner with dysgraphia or writing difficulties, writing answers as part of this fun activity is a great, low pressure way to practice writing.

Speech To Text Practice

When my youngest was learning how to use his speech to text technology on his phone, we often texted our answers to these questions back and forth for fun. It was a great way to practice using the assistive technology with very low stakes. It was also a lot more fun!
