CTCMath: Finding The Best Math Curriculum For Your Homeschool
It took a long time for me to find a math curriculum that really works for my son. With CTCMath however, math has become the easiest part of our homeschool day. Here’s everything you need to determine if CTCMath is the best curriculum for your homeschool too.
I used to worry about math all the time.
In general, my son struggles with a traditional approach to learning. Although he tends to be quite good with math concepts, the reality of math drills and practice caused many a broken pencil and too many tears (for both of us!).
After years of pressure and stress, I knew we needed a new approach. Because online learning was something that interested him, we tried CTCMath.
I don’t worry about math anymore.
Since we made the change to CTCMath, my son has progressed more than ever before. He sees himself as good in math and is actually excited about math heading into this new school year.
It wasn’t anything that I did to teach him. We simply found a program that is the very best fit for his needs. Most importantly, not only is he learning, he is far more confident than ever before.
Because it has worked so well for us, and because I share it all the time in my weekly lesson plan recaps, many of you have reached out and asked for more information regarding the CTCMath program.
What Is CTCMath?
CTCMath is an online learning program developed by a father of ten children, with twenty years teaching experience. It is a subscription math curriculum that learning from Kindergarten all the way through Calculus.
Moreover, CTCMath specializes in providing online video tutorials that take a multi-sensory approach to learning. (This alone makes a huge difference in our homeschool. If it’s multisensory, my son is more likely to engage with and retain what he is learning.)
Take a look at all the features and benefits of learning with CTCMath.
Online Learning With CTCMath
Access to all Levels
This is a huge benefit for us! CTCMath gives access to every single level, K – 12 at all times. It’s perfect for the accelerated learner who is advanced in some topics and needs to accelerate quickly. Conversely, it also works well for a child struggling and in need of reviewing topics covered in a previous level.
Placement Tests Are Optional
This is a personal preference of mine. Having placement tests as optional makes things so much easier. Although I understand the need for placement tests, in my experience, children with learning differences can feel pressure and unnecessary stress associated with them. I prefer to start my boys with an easy lesson or two until they are comfortable with the program, and then allow them to complete the placement tests. They are more accurate in their answers and don’t immediately write off the program as “too hard” or “boring.” (I cannot stress this benefit enough. Online learning works well for my son, but only if we have this flexibility. Many programs require the placement test upfront, before allowing access to the material. This has never worked well for us.)
Straightforward Interactive Lessons
The lessons themselves consist of 4 to 9 minute tutorials (perfect for my son’s attention span). Animated and interactive, each lesson is presented in an online format, and also has the option of a printable PDF with a lesson overview. I love this feature. If my son doesn’t understand something, we can discuss it without having to go back and watch the video again (something for which he has very little patience). I simply print up the PDF, we move to the couch and continue the learning.
Options for Practice
In addition to a worksheet for each lesson, there are also options for practice included in the program. Times tables review, math facts, and even logic puzzles are accessible for extras throughout the program.
Why CTCMath Works So Well For My Child
All of the above features and benefits make a difference in my child’s learning. The things that matter the most specifically for my child are:
- shorter lessons
- lots of white space on the screen to help with focus
- the ability to review previous grade levels if needed
It’s like CTCMath designed a program specifically for my child’s learning needs.
